The catastrophic bushfires in NSW and QLD have been worsened by climate change and the Federal Government needs to respond to this unprecedented threat, Emergency Leaders for Climate Action has warned.
The coalition of 23 fire and emergency services leaders from every state and territory has demanded more support for emergency services and firefighters, and an urgent plan to phase out fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas, which are driving climate change.
Bob Conroy, Former Fire Manager, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service: “One million hectares have been burned in our state, and it’s not even summer yet. Fire agencies, firefighters, and volunteers are working round the clock to manage the situation, but they’re up against unprecedented conditions fuelled by climate change.”
“Climate change is supercharging the hot and dry conditions that are making these fires much worse, leaving farmers struggling for water, and worsening extreme heatwaves. We need to act urgently on addressing climate change and invest more heavily in bushfire, prevention, mitigation and suppression programs.”
