As the COVID-19 pandemic worsens, Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA) has decided to postpone its planned National Bushfire Emergency Summit event until next year. In the meantime, ELCA will hold Australia’s first virtual bushfire and climate change conference later this year.
ELCA is now developing an online series of events that will bring together representatives from bushfire-affected communities, fire and emergency services, the military and home affairs, industry, economists, farmers, the health sector, veterinarians, scientists and local governments.
“With medical experts calling for stronger social distancing measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus, we have decided to replace the planned physical event this year with an online format,” said Greg Mullins, former Commissioner, Fire and Rescue NSW.
“As this summer’s climate change-fuelled bushfires show, it is imperative to reduce emissions and shift Australia to a low-carbon economy.
“We will continue to push for emissions reductions and better resourcing for emergency services because it is critical for the long-term well-being of Australians. But we will do it in a safe and responsible manner that doesn’t compromise the safety of vulnerable people.
“We are still finalising a plan for the virtual conference. We remain committed to gathering the knowledge of experts from various sectors, and putting forward a series of recommendations to Australia’s decision-makers as we prepare for the next bushfire season,” said Mr Mullins.
More details will soon be announced here.
